Australians are being spammed with a fictitious email, scaremongering, saying that mobile numbers are soon to be made public and that telemarketers’ calls to your moby will be charged to you. It looks as if this hoax originated in the US and has been imported here out of naivety or maliciousness.
I got the email yesterday (in bold below) and upon speaking with the Australian Communications and Media Authority (who manage the Do Not Call (DNC) Register on behalf of the Australian Government) they were able to confirm that.
1. Australia is not making mobile phone numbers public at present.
2. You will not be automatically charged for telemarketing calls to your mobile.
3. The DNC Register has been accepting registration of mobile phone numbers for the Register already, for years.
4. The embedded link, in the email, to the DNC site is correct but that’s about all that is.
I’m sending this on in case you are unaware, that mobile numbers are going public. I’ve now been to the site and registered my mobile and it is the correct government site (not spam).
This is for Australian phone numbers
REMEMBER: Mobile Phone Numbers Go Public next month.
REMINDER all mobile phone numbers are being released to Telemarketing companies and you will start to receive sale calls.
YOU WILL BE CHARGED FOR THESE CALLS
Below is a link where you can enter your phone numbers online to put an end to telemarketing calls. Don’t just delete those calls.
Otherwise you will find that you have been signed up for all sorts of extra services that you didn’t want or know about. Like special chimes, music etc.
PASS THIS ON TO AS MANY PEOPLE AS YOU CAN…
